Boxing footwork drills for beginners
Ask any coach what separates a boxer from someone just hitting a bag and you'll hear the same answer: feet. Balance, defence and putting your punches together all start from the ground. Footwork is a skill, not a gift, and it improves with simple, regular practice. Here are five drills you can do at the gym or at home.
Drill 1: Stance (your home base)
Feet about shoulder-width apart, lead foot pointing forward, back heel slightly raised. Knees soft, weight evenly spread, hands up. Every drill below starts and finishes here. Try it: hold your stance for 30 seconds, relax, reset. Do it 5 times, checking your feet in a mirror.
Drill 2: Step in, step out
To move forward, step with your lead foot, then bring the back foot the same distance. To move back, the back foot goes first. Never let your feet cross or come together. Try it: 3 rounds of 1–2 minutes, moving up and down a straight line.
Drill 3: Lateral steps
Moving left, the left foot steps first and the right follows. Moving right, the right foot goes first. Stay low and keep your stance width. Try it: 3 rounds of 1 minute side to side. Tape lines or floor tiles make good markers.
Drill 4: The bounce
Light, small bounces on the balls of your feet, staying in stance. It builds rhythm and keeps you ready to move. Low and relaxed, not high and tiring. Try it: 3 × 30 seconds. Then add a step in and out every few bounces.
Drill 5: Pivots
Turn on the ball of your lead foot and swing your back foot round about a quarter turn. Pivots help you change angle without losing balance. Try it: 10 slow pivots each way, then build speed while keeping control.
Bonus: put it together
Shadow box for one round where your feet do the work: step, slide, bounce, pivot, and keep your hands simple with a jab off each move. This works just as well in a spare room as it does at the gym.
Common mistakes
- Crossing your feet when moving sideways
- Standing flat-footed
- Bouncing so high you lose balance
- Looking down at your feet
How often?
A 10–15 minute footwork block at the start of most sessions is plenty. Little and often wins. Practise, be patient, and ask your coach to check your technique.
